A New High-Performance Reagent and Procedure for Latent Bloodstain Detection Based on Luminol Chemiluminescence

Abstract: A new occult blood revealing agent was designed such that DNA material would be preserved and a DNA profile could be obtained. Indeed, there were uncertainties about previous chemicals that might alter blood DNA content and have adverse effects on DNA typing. BlueStar ® is a chemiluminescent bloodstain detecting agent resulting from our research. It combines ease-of-use with minimum health risks and does not have any harmful effects on DNA profile determination. RÉSUMÉRésultat de nos recherches, le BlueStar ® … Show more

“…Recently, a commercially available patented luminolbased formulation called Bluestar ® Forensic (ROC Import Group, Monte Carlo, Monaco) has become available and has been evaluated against traditional luminol preparations [58,59]. From an examination of the material safety data sheets available at the supplier's website (http://www.bluestar-forensic.com), the key differences in the formulation are the use of urea peroxide as an oxidant and sodium hydroxide to provide the basic conditions required for the reaction.…”

“…To demonstrate bio-sensing on chip, aqueous sensor droplets containing latent bloodstain reagent [9] and an analyte sample droplet containing a synthetic blood analog (Bluestar Forensic) were propelled and subsequently mixed using ethanol fuel droplets. Chemiluminescence emitted from the reaction of the bloodstain with iron catalyst in the blood analog solution was recorded in a dark room using the same digital camera system as described above.…”
