A New Indicator to Assess Public Perception of Air Pollution Based on Complaint Data

Abstract: Severe air pollution problems have led to a rise in the Chinese public’s concern, and it is necessary to use monitoring stations to monitor and evaluate pollutant levels. However, monitoring stations are limited, and the public is everywhere. It is also essential to understand the public’s awareness and behavioral response to air pollution. Air pollution complaint data can more directly reflect the public’s real air quality perception than social media data. Therefore, based on air pollution complaint data and… Show more

“…The projects we described have shown multi-pronged citizen science approaches with perceptive discoveries. Open-mindedness can be taught [36]: those students (both their familiar and their school environments) revealed a progress in their awareness about energy management, urban ecology and air pollution [51]. Moreover, a bridge was built between professional scientists, stakeholders and the local communities.…”

“…Today, citizen science can be seen as a discipline per se [49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56], including gamified approaches [57,58]. The Citizen Cyberscience Center involving CERN, the UN Institute for Training and Research in Switzerland and Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) in the UK [12] are just a few examples.…”

“…The most important feature that sets this method apart from others is that the weights are calculated with the least amount of estimation error possible [36]. The Kriging interpolation method is commonly used in air pollution mapping studies [37]. The general equation is given in Eq.…”

“…As the residential address for each participant was not available while a community was relatively small, we used the coordinates (i.e., longitude and latitude) of the health service center in each community as a surrogate of the residential location. The coordinates were requested through the AutoNavi Map web service API ( 15 , 16 ) ( https://lbs.amap.com/ ). The monthly air pollution concentrations at each coordinate were assigned to the participants in the corresponding community and were further incorporated as a time-varying variable in the analysis.…”
