A new location system for an underground mining environment using visible light communications

Abstract: International audienceIn this paper we introduce a novel localization algorithm based on visible light communications (VLC) and the trilateration technique. The new algorithm can be used for tracking people or machinery in an underground mining environment. The proposed method utilizes the concept of reference points in order to reduce the location estimation error. The proposed algorithm outperforms the LANDMARC (location identification based on dynamic active radio frequency identification (RFID) calibration… Show more

“…Another application of a VLC-based alarm system for mining environments is presented in [28]. Finally, several works that applied localization in mining environments based on VLC systems are presented in [29][30][31][32]. As we can see, the largest number of works related to VLC in underground mines, are security applications, location, or brief proposals of channel models that can be improved; thus, this presents an opportunity to analyze other problems present in these scenarios, such as the decrease of the ICI or the improvement of system performance.…”

“…Similarly, in [23] Jung et al estimate the locations of an object in the room, by means of three LED lamps, where each LED lamp has a unique frequency address (F-ID). In [28], a location system for an underground mining environment is proposed, the positioning is provided by an algorithm that estimates the state of the optical channel prior the application of the trilateration technique using several fixed reference points. The goodness of this approach is related to the number of reference points; in fact, using 3 LEDs and with an hypothetically infinite number of reference points the estimation error can reach the order of few cm, while increasing up to 1 m even with 13 reference points.…”

“…Furthermore, they show that the approximation of the deterministic joint probabilistic model is very tight. From a practical point of view, both approaches could be used in real OFDMA networks either using radio frequency (RF) or visible light communications (VLC) [16] technologies since the models we present are generic. In particular, when the channel condition is favorable, the individual approach would suffice.…”
