a b s t r a c tThis paper aims to identify the differences and similarities in the way to explain self-organization from the different theories of complex systems used in management, which we have grouped as complex systems theories, complex adaptive systems (CAS) and organizational cybernetics. For this purpose we suggest three parallel and complementary dimensions to delimit the conceptual spaces where these theories can be placed. Using this classification as an analytical lens we summarize the core arguments suggested by each of these complex systems approaches, regarding the ideas of emergence and new order. This analysis helps us to conclude that the three theories coincide in their interest for studying nonlinear complex systems, but diverge in the nature of the complex problems studied. Finally we analyze the consequences that recognizing the similarities and differences between these approaches have, when using them for the study and research of social and business organizations and their management. Para tal fin se proponen tres dimensiones paralelas y complementarias que permiten demarcar el espacio dentro del cual se ubican las distintas teorías. Usando como eje analítico esta herramienta de clasificación, se resumen los planteamientos realizados por cada una de las aproximaciones respecto a la emergencia de nuevo y orden; y se concluye que las tres teorías coinciden en el estudio de los sistemas complejos no lineales, pero se diferencian en la naturaleza de los problemas abordados. Finalmente se analizan las consecuencias que el reconocimiento de las semejanzas y diferencias entre los diferentes enfoques tiene para su utilización en el estudio y gestión de organizaciones sociales. This paper analyses the convenience of the Viable System Model (VSM) as a framework to guide organisational adaptive response and resilience in times of instability and change. Methodological approach: A thought experiment based on the case study of an eco-village where a project based on action research was conducted following the introduction of the VSM Findings: The work provides evidence of the efficacy of the VSM and its recursive structure to facilitate resilience and organisational adaptation, and provides evidence of its advantages over conventional management tools to deal with uncertainty in complex environments. Research limitations: Based on a case study, the scope of the study is limited and context specific. The comparison of tools is also limited to the ones related with allocation of resources aiming to provide resilience, viability and adaptive response to critical events. Implications: The case study invites to revisit and discuss the fitness of conventionally used management tools to cope with complexity-from an organisational perspective. Originality and value: This document invites to a reflection on the nature of dominant management tools used in contemporary management to cope with complexity-The document provides insights on the value of organizational cybernetics and its capability to guide organizations in times of instability and change while facilitating resilience and adaptation through the management of variety

Purpose: Data-driven decision-making is a growing trend that lots of companies are nowadays willing to adopt. However, the organizational transformation needed is not always as simple and logical as it could seem and the comfort of the old habits can dim the change effort. The purpose of this study is to identify the potential problems that may arise in a real company’s transformation from a traditional intuition-driven decision-making model to a data-driven model. Design/methodology/approach: In order to reach this goal, a single case study method was used. Initially a literature review was conducted to analyze both the importance of the change to a data-driven culture and the process of organizational change. Thus, a case study method was adopted in a company of the automotive sector that included experimentation in the website design decision-making process. Findings: As a result of the case study, it was found that all the most cited risks for the organizational change process commented in the literature appeared in the project. However, even being warned of potential dangers the specific actions to prevent the damages were not trivial.Originality/value: The study presents in detail, the application of an organizational change model in a company. Important insights can be extracted from the specific case of a digitalization performed inside traditional industrial company.
