A new method for earthquake-induced damage identification in historic masonry towers combining OMA and IDA

Abstract: This paper presents a novel method for rapidly addressing the earthquake-induced damage identification task in historic masonry towers. The proposed method, termed DORI, combines operational modal analysis (OMA), FE modeling, rapid surrogate modeling (SM) and non-linear Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). While OMA-based Structural Health Monitoring methods using statistical pattern recognition are known to allow the detection of small structural damages due to earthquakes, even far-field ones of moderate int… Show more

“…Other studies emphasise the importance of including structural health monitoring (SHM) as part of DT implementation to address the real-time connection between physical and virtual assets. Both García-Macías et al [22] and Kita et al [23] proposed the use of surrogate models to overcome the large computational effort required for historical structures in traditional FE-based approaches and improve the effectiveness of SHM based on automated operational modal analysis (OMA) for real-time condition assessment and continuous model updating.…”

“…Numerical modeling research has been conducted to evaluate the structural response of the geological formation on which the megalithic monument lies. In particular, finite element analysis was selected and applied in this case since the research community widely accepts it as an effective method for the structural assessment of historic infrastructure in restoration plans [17,18]. Both static and dynamic numerical analysis are widely utilized for the modeling of the structural response of masonry structures.…”

“…Kita et al [6] presented a methodology to address the rapid post-earthquake damage localization and quantification tasks, based on non-linear Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). In theirs later article, by combining Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), previous method was updated, which allows the detection of small structural damages due to earthquakes and far-field seismic identification [7]. However, many researchers (i.e., Guo, 2017 [8]) have reported the impractically expensive computational effort of IDA.…”
