A new method for ranking potential hazards and risks from wastes

Abstract:  A new scoring methodology was developed for hazardous wastes  The approach utilises European Union hazard property list and H-codes  The approach considers physical, health, environment, amenity and other hazards  The scoring approach was demonstrated with 29 hazardous wastes in Australia  The hazard scoring enables ranking of wastes for prioritising management efforts

“…All lead compounds are considered hazardous to human health due to their negative effects on the nervous system, kidney, and other major organs. [32][33][34] Li-ion batteries are the preferred technology in the global battery market for electric vehicles and household appliances. [35][36][37] These batteries contain cobalt, nickel, iron, aluminum, or manganese species as positive electrodes, and graphite, carbon, or copper as negative electrodes.…”

“…Therefore, an additional hazardous or non-hazardous character assessment is not necessary for AH and ANH types of waste. For the absolutely hazardous (AH) and absolutely non-hazardous (ANH) types of waste, inclusion in the List of Wastes is evident; however, for waste with "mirror entry" codes, an evaluation of the hazardous properties HP1-HP15 is necessary [5,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. This evaluation involves a set of complex theoretical and experimental investigations [14][15][16].…”
