Abstract:Background & Aims: Hypoxia in the intestinal epithelium can be caused by acute ischemic events or conditions like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) where immune cell infiltration produces "inflammatory hypoxia", a chronic condition that starves the mucosa of oxygen.
