A new model for dura mater healing: human dural fibroblast culture

Abstract: According to the findings, unlike mini-pigs and rabbits, in humans, dural fibroblast sensitivity to collagen seems to be lower. Dexamethasone inhibits fibroblast invasion, which is the biological base of wound dehiscence in cranial surgery. Although Spongostan is useful, Surgicel® can lower the media pH, thereby inhibiting cellular growth.

“…A few additions have also been made to the list of available treatment options with the most noteworthy being endoscopic third ventriculostomy The median time from shunt placement to first shunt failure noted in our study was 22.5 days, which is comparable to that reported by other studies (12,14). As mentioned previously, the development of hydrocephalus following cranial surgery (29) may be attributed to the direct collateral damage incurred during the surgical procedure (19).…”

“…This is considerably lower than the overall VP shunt failure rate (inclusive of all etiologies) reported by previous studies from other parts of the world (25,30,34,35,49,51). However, the shunt failure rate observed in our study is in line with more recent reports published in the literature, even from the developing world (12,14).…”

“…However, results of a recently established human primary culture model differ from those of animal‐based studies. Human dura mater cells (hDMCs) do not rely on collagen coating in culture and cell growth and do not exhibit significant inhibition of proliferation with mitomycin‐C, a mitosis inhibitor, unlike the results of animal experiments …”

“…Our group has previously demonstrated using in‐vitro experiments that ROC inhibits the growth of human dural fibroblasts, which are essential to achieve healing. The present study was performed to assess the impact of oxidized cellulose on the nasal mucosa and identify its effects on tissue pH, structure and cell viability.…”
