A new standardization model for physician staffing at hospitals

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop a model for physician staffing requirements that could be generally applied to any hospital department, taking into account factors such as occupancy level, professional absences, allowances, physician work duties and patient service levels. Design/methodology/approach The ability to generalize the model was tested via its implementation to five hospital departments considered to represent a cross-section of all hospital requirements: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Orthoped… Show more

“…It does not mean to operate at high level of utilization, where utilization is defined as the ratio of the number of customers served to the capacity, but to find a balance between efficiency and responsiveness (Terwiesch et al, 2011). Due to shortages and increased cost, managers must control the main healthcare resources, as it demonstrates Ben-Gal et al (2010) by developing a model for physician staffing requirements. The complexity of healthcare operations is certainly a decisive factor for a problematic capacity measurement, so that a better understanding of underutilized resources not only lead to better capacity management reducing profit loss or unnecessary investments (Bamford and Chatziaslan, 2009), but also the need to use robust methods to measure the capacity.…”

“…Within the healthcare sector, they have been used to determine the optimum capacity of operating room on-call staffing for urgent procedures (Dexter & Liam, 2001), and model physician workforce requirements, taking into consideration elements such as physician work duties, patient service levels, and patient occupancy levels (Ben-Gal, Wangenheim, & Shtub, 2010). “…Among predictive methodologies, statistics and regression have been frequently used for a variety of forecasting purposes. Within the healthcare sector, they have been used to determine the optimum capacity of operating room on-call staffing for urgent procedures (Dexter & Liam, 2001), and model physician workforce requirements, taking into consideration elements such as physician work duties, patient service levels, and patient occupancy levels (Ben-Gal, Wangenheim, & Shtub, 2010). Lin and Juan (2010) developed a model focusing on industrial, organizational, and macroeconomic parameters affecting hotel human resource demand based on the generalized least square method.…”
