A new suprageneric classification of the Proteaceae, with an annotated checklist of genera

Abstract: A new suprageneric classification of the Proteaceae is presented that takes account of available molecular systematic results, synthesised as a phylogenetic supertree. Subfamilial, tribal and subtribal names are recircumscribed or created, where necessary, to ensure the putative monophyly of named higher taxa. Subfamilies, tribes and subtribes are briefly described. One new subfamily, Symphionematoideae, two new tribes, Petrophileae, Leucadendreae, and four new subtribes, Leucadendreae subtribe Isopogoninae, L… Show more

“…If these relationships are supported by additional research, Jaffré et al 2001). However, Weston & Barker (2006) treated the New Caledonian species as Eucarpha Spach, based on a phylogenetic supertree that combined several molecular studies. In that tree, Knightia grouped with Roupala, Orites and Neorites, whereas Eucarpha grouped with Floydia and Darlingia.…”

“…Toronia, a monospecific genus from New Zealand, was previously included in Persoonia, as P. toru (Allan 1961). Weston & Barker (2006), Barker et al (2007b, Hoot & Douglas (1998) and Sauquet et al (2009) accepted Toronia and included it in Persoonioideae. Sauquet et al (2009; Fig.…”

“…Finschia comprises three Papuasian species and is currently recognised as a member of tribe Embothrieae, subtribe Hakeinae (Proteaceae) (Weston & Barker 2006). All Finschia species are trees with buttressed trunks, often raised on stilt roots.…”
