A New Technical Standard for Testing of Heavy Brines

Abstract: A new technical standard has been developed for assessing the performance and physical characteristics of heavy brines used in completion, packer, and drill-in operations. This technical standard includes procedures for evaluating the density, specific gravity, clarity, amount of suspended particulate matter, crystallization point, pH, and iron contamination. It also contains a discussion of gas hydrate formation and mitigation, brine viscosity, brine crystallization at high pressures, corrosion testing, buffe… Show more

“…In the wellbore environment, the brine experiences the confluence of two key factors: the prevalent temperature within the formation and the exerted pressure from the superjacent brine column. 89 As a result, the brine density can manifest noteworthy deviations compared to the density of brine at the well's surface. Thus, to accurately determine the average density of the brine in the wellbore, it is imperative to integrate corrections for both temperature and pressure influences.…”

“…These tests measure the physical properties and performance of heavy brines used in field operations as shown in Table 3. 109 Furthermore, a groundbreaking method has recently been developed to assess the effectiveness of completion brines, specifically focusing on their impact on productivity through screen blockage and incomplete cleanup. 110 This innovative method was not previously included in the standard test protocols.…”
