A New Transitional Abutment for Immediate Aesthetics and Function

Abstract: Maintenance of the patient's self-esteem and confidence throughout the implant-treatment process is essential. Development of a provisional prosthesis that will be stable and esthetic should begin with the initial examination and should involve all members of the implant team. This article presents 3 cases that demonstrate a team-centered approach in using a poly (acrylether) ketone plastic provisional abutment (Peek). This abutment, cost-effective and easily modified, supports a transitional prosthesis that i… Show more

“…Based on these excellent physical and biological properties -despite the lack of clinical long-term studies-this composite material seems to be suitable for superstructures in dentistry, i.e. for dental implants, provisional abutments, fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), as well as implant-supported bars and clamps for removable prostheses [15][16][17][18][19] . PEEK represents a high performance thermoplastic polymer within this material group with a low melting temperature of 343°C and can therefore be processed in various ways.…”

“…Its application has extended from the aircraft and automobile industries to biomaterials used in medical implants 8) . Currently, PEEK is introduced for dental applications, such as transitional abutments 9) , healing abutments 10) and dental clasps 11) . It can also be used as an alternative rigid material for removable partial denture prosthesis frameworks 12) and fixed dental prostheses 13) due to its non-metallic color, low weight and high strength.…”

“…Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been used in prosthetic dentistry as provisional abutment, implant, implant supported bar or clamp material in the field of removable dental prostheses (RDPs) [1][2][3][4]. It is a high-temperature semi crystalline thermoplastic polymer from the group of polyaryletherketone (PAEK) consisting of an aromatic backbone molecular chain, interconnected by ketone and ether functional groups [5] with the density of 1.3 -1.5 g/cm 3 .…”
