A New Vibration Energy Harvester Using Magnetoelectric Transducer

Abstract: Magnetoelectric (ME) transducers were originally intended for magnetic field sensors but have recently been used in vibration energy harvesting. In this paper, a new broadband vibration energy harvester has been designed and fabricated to be efficiently applicable over a range of source frequencies, which consists of two cantilever beams, two magnetoelectric (ME) transducers and a magnetic circuit. The effects of the structure parameters, such as the non-linear magnetic forces of the ME transducers and the mag… Show more

“…Several designs of ME energy harvesters have been proposed using an Fe-Ni rich alloy and PZT [13], Terfenol-D and PZT [14] or PMNT [15], and Ni-Mn-Ga and PZT [16] as magnetostrictive and piezoelectric constituents, respectively. Values of the harvested energy range between a few μW and some mW.…”

“…A variety of tuning techniques have been proposed for resonant frequency-tuning systems, including mechanical methods (Wu et al, 2008), electrical methods (Charnegie, 2007;Wu et al, 2006), and external magnetic methods (Aboulfotoh et al, 2013;Zhou et al, 2013). In addition to these resonance-tuning techniques, several other methods have also been proposed to widen the bandwidth of vibration energy harvesters, such as a generator array consisting of small generators with different frequencies (Ferrari et al, 2008;Shahruz, 2006), amplitude limiter setting (Soliman et al, 2008), and nonlinear structures (Marin et al, 2013;Townsend and Shenoi, 2013;Yang et al, 2011). It is worth mentioning that numerous studies have been conducted on a multistable energy harvester system, which drastically widened the bandwidth of the resonance peak of concern, with recent pioneering research by Kim (2013).…”

“…Independente do mecanismo de transdução, uma primeira questão em Energy Harvesting baseada em vibrações mecânicas é que o melhor desempenho de um gerador é usualmente limitado a excitações em sua frequência fundamental de ressonância (YANG et al, 2010;ThTMAN, 2009). Entretanto, se a vibração ambiente aplicada desvia-se ligeiramente da condição de ressonância, a energia de saída é drasticamente reduzida.…”
