A nickel tetra-coordinated complex as catalyst in heterogeneous hydrogenation

Abstract: :The complex supported on pro-c-Al 2 O 3 duces a catalyst which is considerably more active and sulfur-resistant for the hydrogenation of cyclohexene carried out in mild conditions than a conventional catalyst obtained from acid solutions of and even than the same complex NiCl 2 unsupported. As determined by XPS, the active species is the complex itself, which is stable under the reaction conditions. The higher sulfur-resistance is attributed to electronic and geometrical e †ects. The catalyst system is consid… Show more

“…It is well known that silicon and sulfur are two possible contaminants of polystyrene. When polystyrene is used as a catalytic support of complex species, sulfur can also act as a poison because it may substitute some ligands, generating less‐active catalytic species 4–8. Although it is possible to regenerate, within certain limits, a poisoned complex catalyst,6 it is desirable to ensure that the support is free from this contaminant.…”

“…Considerable higher activity, selectivity and sulfur‐resistance levels may be obtained by using these catalysts rather than traditional ones. In addition, complex catalysts may be operated under milder conditions 5–8…”

“…Catalytic homogeneous hydrogenation of cyclohexene has been claimed for simple systems such as nickel(II) acetylacetonate [39] or a nickel-chloride complex with two monodentate amines [40]. The latter complex was used as comparison for a heterogeneous catalyst obtained by impregnation of the complex on c-alumina [40].…”

“…These coordination compounds, used as catalysts, have gained increasing importance for such reactions [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] because they allow getting higher activities and selectivities, even under mild conditions of temperature and pressure [29][30][31][32][33].…”
