A nonintrinsic regional basis for increased infrarenal aortic MMP-9 expression and activity

Abstract: These data demonstrate that variations in aortic MMP-9 expression and activity result from regional factors affecting the aorta rather than intrinsic aortic wall differences. Increases in abdominal aortic MMP-9 may contribute to the predilection for aneurysm to develop in the infrarenal aorta.

“…92 This phenomenon has not been studied in experimental aneurysm formation. However, when Ailawadi et al 86 transplanted syngeneic thoracic aortic segments into the abdominal aorta, variations in matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression appeared to be related to regional factors and not intrinsic aortic wall factors.…”

“…The thoracic and abdominal aorta contain cells of distinct embryologic origins [3]. Additionally, the thoracic aorta has greater elastin content and contains more prominent vaso vasora than the abdominal aorta [4][5][6]. Current nonsurgical therapy for AAA and TAA is aimed at preventing further dilation and includes risk factor reduction and b-adrenergic blockade (for TAA), both with limited efficacy [1,7].…”
