Goat meat production is an expanding industry in Australia. However, there is limited data quantifying the levels of reproductive performance, particularly under extensively grazed rangeland conditions, which would inform interventions to improve performance. This review aimed to quantify the levels of reproduction, time and causes of reproductive wastage in goats. It considers the levels of fertility, fecundity, embryonic loss, fetal loss and post-natal survival reported under Australian conditions, and comparisons are made with international reports. Key management factors that may contribute to reproductive performance include breed, seasonality, nutritional conditions, and weather conditions at kidding. While goats are potentially prolific breeders, in Australia, the variation in weaning rate (kids/doe joined) among properties is large (51–165%), although the causes of this variation are not well defined. Generally, conception and kidding rates are high, although fetal loss associated with undernutrition is more likely in goats than sheep. As with sheep, perinatal losses are generally the largest source of wastage, with an average 20% kid mortality, but this level is influenced by litter size and appears to be higher under extensive rangeland systems. The causes of perinatal kid loss under Australian conditions are similar to those in sheep, with starvation–mismothering–exposure and dystocia or stillbirth the key causes. Studies are needed to accurately quantify the level and causes of reproductive wastage in commercial herds, including a range of management situations, to enable effective interventions to be developed.

RESUMO -Avaliaram-se as correlações entre a pluviometria e as características produtivas em caprinos Pardo-Alpina × Gurgueia criados em regime semi-intensivo no Cariri Ocidental, microrregião semiárida do estado da Paraíba. Utilizaram-se informações de peso ao nascer, produção de leite, mortalidade dos cabritos até os 90 dias de idade e pluviosidade registrada na Fazenda Carnaúba. Os dados pluviométricos foram transformados para Log X . Houve baixa correlação entre o peso ao nascer, a produção de leite e mortalidade com as variáveis pluviométricas.Palavras-chave: chuva, mortalidade, peso ao nascer, produção de leite Correlation among rainfall and productive traits of goats in the semi-arid region of ParaíbaABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlations between rainfall data and goat productive traits in Alpine × Gurgueia breeds goats, raised in a intensive regime in the Ocidental Cariri, a semi-arid microclime of Paraíba State, Brazil. Birth weight, milk production and mortality of kids to 90 days of age and rainfall data from the Carnauba Farm were used. The rainfall data were transformed in Log x . The birth weight, milk production and mortality correlated reasonably correlated with the rainfall variables. There was lower correlation among birth weight, milk production and mortality and the rainfall data.

A total of 497 Merino ewes were allocated to one of four experimental groups for the period 1996 to 1998. The treatments were designed to provide data on the effect of shade during an autumn lambing season and the effect of shearing prior to joining in September or prior to lambing in February. Dietary intake in shaded and control paddocks was similar, but animals in shaded paddocks consumed less water than those in control paddocks. Lambs born in shaded paddocks tended to be heavier at birth than those born in control paddocks. Survival of lambs was unaffected by the provision of shade, but lambs born in shaded paddocks were 3.8 % heavier at weaning than contemporaries born in control paddocks. Lambs born to ewes that were shorn prior to lambing tended to be lighter than those from ewes shorn prior to joining. Lamb survival prior to weaning tended to be higher in lambs born to ewes shorn prior to lambing than in those shorn prior to joining. Shearing of ewes prior to lambing had a beneficial effect on lamb survival during 1997, when the survival of progeny of ewes shorn prior to joining was low. Annual lamb survival data obtained in the present experiment were combined with that from two previous experiments conducted at the same site. The response in lamb survival of the progeny of ewes shorn prior to lambing depended on the average lamb survival observed in the control group. Multiple-born progeny of ewes shorn prior to lambing grew faster to lamb marking than contemporaries born to ewes shorn prior to joining. No difference was detected in single lambs. The clean fleece weight of ewes shorn prior to lambing was heavier than that of contemporaries shorn prior to joining. Similar benefits were found for staple strength and the frequency of mid-staple breaks. It was concluded that the shearing of ewes prior to lambing might be advantageous under certain conditions, particularly when lamb survival is likely to be low.
