A Novel Bidirectional Antenna With Broadband Circularly Polarized Radiation in X-Band

Abstract: A novel bidirectional antenna with a broadband circular polarization (CP) property in X-band is proposed. The CP characteristics are simply achieved by the asymmetrical Y-shaped feeding line. Both the impedance bandwidth and the axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth can be greatly improved by a through-via that is in series with an inductive strip and the polygon slot structure. The antenna is fabricated and measured for verifying the theory. A good agreement is achieved between the simulated and measured results. The 10… Show more

“…A novel design of the bidirectional antenna based on spoof surface plasmon has been successfully implemented with good performance in [2]. Meanwhile, a number of the circularly polarized (CP) or the polarization reconfigurability bidirectional antenna array has been designed [7][8][9][10]. In [7], a slot antenna with a broadband CP bidirectional radiation pattern is proposed for the X-band applications.…”

“…Meanwhile, a number of the circularly polarized (CP) or the polarization reconfigurability bidirectional antenna array has been designed [7][8][9][10]. In [7], a slot antenna with a broadband CP bidirectional radiation pattern is proposed for the X-band applications. However, the aforementioned designs, which are all based on the metal, usually suffer from the conductor loss of the metal as the operation frequency arises.…”

“…For the communication systems in coal mine, tunnel with long and narrow spaces, the antennas with bidirectional radiation pattern are attractive candidates for relay base stations . Compared to the linearly polarized antennas, circularly polarized (CP) antennas are adopted due to their good performance in reducing the polarization mismatch, which is due to the multipath diffraction and reflection . However, in such applications, the CP antennas with different sense for bidirectional patterns usually mismatch the polarizations between two antennas, e.g., one antenna of left hand circularly polarization (LHCP) with another antenna of right hand circularly polarization (RHCP).…”

“…For this quest, there are various strategies using layered structures to generate the bidirectional CP wave with identical or opposite helicities. For example, slot apertures are a well-known method to produce bidirectional CP wave, but with intrinsically opposite helicities 11,12 . To achieve the identical helicities, structures with multiple layers (more than two layers) are indispensable, for example, a three-layered frequency selective surfaces or back-to-back patches with a common ground (three metallic layers and two dielectric layers) 13,14 .…”
