A Novel Chitosan-γPGA Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogel Promotes Early New Bone Formation in the Alveolar Socket Following Tooth Extraction

Abstract: A novel chitosan-γPGA polyelectrolyte complex hydrogel (C-PGA) has been developed and proven to be an effective dressing for wound healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if C-PGA could promote new bone formation in the alveolar socket following tooth extraction. An animal model was proposed using radiography and histomorphology simultaneously to analyze the symmetrical sections of Wistar rats. The upper incisors of Wistar rats were extracted and the extraction sockets were randomly treated with gel… Show more

“…Animal procedures were performed in accordance with a protocol approved by the University of Tennessee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Bone defects were generated using procedures modified from those described earlier [19][20][21]. Briefly, rats under anesthesia were placed in a supine position, and the mandible was opened to expose the maxillary surface.…”

“…The biodegradable or biocompatible materials have been used as support matrices for delivery of bioactive species to target specific tissues and to promote three dimensional tissue reconstructions (Liu et al 2007). There are a number of reports explaining the potential of PECs in various areas of tissue engineering like bone tissue engineering (Coimbra et al 2011a), cartilage tissue engineering (Whu et al 2013), cardiac tissue engineering (Ceccaldi et al 2014), and dental tissue engineering (Chang et al 2014, Coimbra et al 2011b). developed PECs capable of MRI contrast enhancement using gadolinium (Gd).…”
