A Novel Composite Equalizer Based on an Additional Cell for Series-Connected Lithium-Ion Cells

Abstract: Cell inconsistency can lead to poor performance and safety hazards. Therefore, cell equalizer is essentially required to prevent the series-connected cells from overcharging, undercharging, and overdischarging. Among current equalization schemes, passive equalizer has a continuously wasting energy with low equalization efficiency, and active equalizer has high cost with complex circuit structure. In this study, a novel composite equalizer based on an additional cell with low complexity is presented. This metho… Show more

“…7 However, due to the battery electrochemical principles, it usually requires hundreds of cells in series to meet the high voltage conditions. 8 The performance of cells in series is not simply proportionally enlarged by a single cell. Battery performance such as durability, safety, and energy density will decrease compared with the single cell.…”

“…Cell equalization is an effective way of compensating for weak cells and providing safer pack solutions to extend battery run time and lifespan as well. In the last decade, considerable balancing architectures with various balancing strategies have been proposed in the literature [15][16][17][18][19][20][21] to solve the problem of cell imbalance. Based on the energy transfer manner, the equalizer is divided into passive and active types [22][23][24].…”
