A novel crosslinker for UV copolymerization of N ‐vinyl pyrrolidone and methacrylates to give hydrogels

Abstract: Methacryloxyethyl vinyl carbonate, a novel crosslinker containing a vinyl carbonate and a methacrylate group which is capable of copolymerizing N‐vinyl pyrrolidone and methacrylates, was prepared. With this crosslinker, N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) and methacrylates can copolymerize efficiently under strictly UV conditions. It was found that this crosslinker was able to give hydrogels with higher water content, higher tear strength, and lower modulus, compared to a traditional dimethacrylate crosslinker. In addit… Show more

“…N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) is a water-soluble, nonionic monomer that can be used to prepare hydrogels 10 . VP-based materials have been of interest in, for example, biomedical applications 11,12 . In recent years, polyacrylic acid (PAA) and its copolymers have often been used as carriers in drug release systems, because of their multifunctional nature, unique properties and good biocompatibility 13,14 .…”

“…The probabilities of the different links are therefore: [12] [13] [14] In this case obviously the majority of the links are C M -C M . The * refers to p CM-these calculations CV* = p CM-CV + p CV-CM and a 2 must be included in the equation.…”

“…Due to the mentioned compositional heterogeneity, an efficient crosslinking of all the chains (i.e. C M and C V ) is not an easy task, and actually the crosslinker homology may play a key role in the network structure and properties, as it has previously been addressed theoretically by Reinecke et al 13 and by Lai 14 . Thus, a crosslinker bearing a methacrylate or a VP-like functionality would crosslink preferentially C M or C V chains, respectively.…”

“…This can be attributed to the high reactivity of MBA crosslinker toward acrylate monomers. [18] On the other hand, it was found that the crosslinked PAN have lower SF values than PAMPS and AN=AMPS copolymers. This can be attributed to the high reactivity of the PAN toward divinyl benzene DVB and acrylate crosslinker, which is much higher than methacrylate crosslinkers.…”
