A novel device for cleaning the camera port during laparoscopic surgery

Abstract: AimPoor visualization of the operative field due to an obscured camera lens is a problem frequently encountered while performing laparoscopic surgery. Little has been published about the prevention of lens obstruction specifically due to a contaminated camera port used for laparoscopic surgery. The aim of our study is to develop a new device, the Endowiper, for cleaning the laparoscopic port.MaterialsThe new cleaner for the port’s valve is made from rolled gauze. To simulate a surgical environment in the labor… Show more

“…Water drop adhesions (WDA) and lens cloudiness impair the clarity of the endoscopic view during gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations and treatments, and they are particularly annoying for endoscopists 1 . Difficult visualization is thought to require greater mental concentration for maintaining a safe and accurate procedure.…”

“…Studies were conducted across various settings, including the western nations of the Netherlands [ 11 ], the United States [ 10 , 13 15 ], Australia [ 17 ] and France [ 9 ], and non-western countries, including Korea [ 12 ] and Japan [ 16 , 18 ]. Among studies involving human subjects, randomised trials [ 9 12 ] recruited participants using random sampling, while the prospective study [ 14 ] recruited subjects using consecutive sampling.…”

“…The uterus, both fallopian tubes, and both ovaries were resected. Pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes were also removed laparoscopically, using an Endowiper (Osaki Medical, Nagoya, Japan) to prevent lens obstruction due to a contaminated camera port 2. Operation time was 345 minutes; blood loss was 290 mL.…”
