A novel field‐sequential blue‐phase‐mode AMLCD

Abstract: Abstract— Through the realization of a blue‐phase‐mode (hereinafter, the operational mode of liquid crystal having a blue phase is referred to as a blue‐phase mode), a display using an improved field‐sequential method was confirmed to be capable of display at a frame rate of 180 fps (field frequency of 540 Hz) or higher. Under this condition, an image without annoyance caused by color breakup was obtained. Moreover, a novel field‐sequential AMLCD integrated with a scan driver by combining the liquid‐crystal‐di… Show more

“…Since the BPLC is best known for its sub-millisecond response [16], our device is eligible for a field sequential color (FSC) scheme [17,18], in which each color of QD backlight is turned on in sequence. For this reason, color washout faced by the conventional IMOD displays is no longer an issue for this device, as the color of QD backlight is so saturated, normally with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) between 20-40 nm [19].…”

“…In 2013, BPLC display is demonstrated by using groove cell. [11] So far, contrast ratio (CR) of BPLC display has poor CR (<1000) due to severe light leakage [12,13]. Previously, we found BPLC revealed polarization rotatory and lead to serious light leakage [14].…”

“…On the other hand, fast response time is particularly appealing as it not only reduces motion image blurs 11 but also enables color-sequential display using RGB LED backlight with negligible color breakup. 12,13 By eliminating spatial color filters, both optical efficiency and resolution density are tripled. High optical efficiency helps to reduce power consumption while high resolution density is particularly desirable for the future Ultra High Definition Television.…”
