A Novel Head Mounted Display Based Methodology for Balance Evaluation and Rehabilitation

Abstract: In this paper, we present a new augmented reality (AR) head mounted display (HMD)-based balance rehabilitation method. This method assesses the individual’s postural stability quantitatively by measuring head movement via the inertial measurement unit sensor integrated in the AR HMD. In addition, it provides visual feedback to train through holographic objects, which interacts with the head position in real-time. We implemented applications for Microsoft HoloLens and conducted experiments with eight participan… Show more

“…Vestibular research groups have focused on the development of an effective and efficient therapy for artificially restoring the vestibular function in vestibular patients. Electrical stimulation can be divided into three subtypes: co-stimulation with a CI, direct vestibular stimulation with a VI, and GVS through surface electrodes [Sluydts et al, 2020] Several clinical applications of AR have already been proposed mainly for rehabilitative and training purposes [Lee et al, 2019;Pezzera et al, 2020;Tada et al, 2022;Blomqvist et al, 2021;Franzo et al, 2022] easy to administer and requires minimal equipment and space. Vereeck et al described a set of normative DGI values to identify healthy subjects [Vereeck et al, 2008].…”

“…Some of the research explicitly mentions the DT approach or a Situated Analytics approach but often simply uses the available technology to demonstrate that their problem can be addressed [428,430,431], implicitly developing a DT and applying Situated Analytics.
