A Novel Hydrophobic Task Specific Ionic Liquid for the Extraction of Cd(II) from Water and Food Samples as Applied to AAS Determination

Abstract: Hydrophobic task specific ionic liquid (TSIL) functionalized 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was synthesized and characterized by NMR and HRMS. The capability of TSIL-MBT for the selective separation and preconcentration of Cd 2+ , which was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) from water and food samples, was investigated. The TSIL-MBT with high selectivity for the extraction of Cd 2+ was discussed by comparing with a traditional extractant, such as ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APD… Show more

“…Similar examples of diluting a TSIL in ILs have been reported previously. 5a,c, 6b, 14 In view of the lower viscosity of BmimPF 6 and BmimNTf 2 compared to OmimPF 6 and OmimNTf 2 , the butyl derivatives of the ionic liquids were used for dilution 15…”

“…The results were shown in Table 1. According to Pearson's hard and soft acid-base concept, common metal ions contained in water or food samples, such as Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , Al 3+ , and K + which are classified as hard acids, interact only weakly with sulfur-containing ligands, which are soft bases, and consequently would not interfere in the determination of Cd 2+ [1]. Therefore, excess amount of such cations and common anions e.g.…”

“…Cadmium is well recognized as a highly toxic element to human beings because of its high accumulation capability in living organisms [1,2]. One of the main pathways that cadmium enters into the human body is through the intake of food and drinking water [3][4][5].…”

“…Therefore, low extraction efficiencies have been observed for the extraction of metal ions from aqueous phase with a conventional IL. In order to effectively extract metal ions from the aqueous phase into ILs, two methods are generally adopted: (1) using chelators or ligands to form complexes to increase the metals' hydrophobicity [13,14], the drawbacks associated with this approach are the difficulty of separating them from ILs and increased complexity of the system upon the addition of solutes; (2) designing functionalized ILs (also called taskspecific ILs) which contain metal ion coordinating groups covalently incorporated to the cation or anion of the ILs [15,16]. In this case, functionalized ILs act as both the hydrophobic solvents and the extractants at the same time.…”
