A Novel, Low-Profile, Vertically-Polarized UWB Antenna for WBAN

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes a novel, low-profile UWB antenna for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. The antenna has a polarization perpendicular to the body-free-space interface, which is interesting in order to minimize the coupling into the body. Its structure comprises a modified mono-cone with a top-cross-plate and is coaxially fed through the ground plane. The higher frequency band performance is due to the mono-cone while the top-cross-plate is responsible for the lower frequency band. This… Show more

“…The omnidirectionality is defined as the gain variation (maximum to minimum) in the azimuthal plane. The wideband of omnidirectional antenna can be achieved by rational design of monopole or dipole [1][2][3], but the conformation of these antennas are rather complicated. Besides, either the gain variation is above 2dB [1][2] or the gain is less than 2dBi [3] in the horizontal plane.…”

“…Hence, the time domain characterization is of great importance to evaluate the pulse-shaping feature of the prototyped antenna and level of distortion generated by the antenna across the utilized band. Although the time domain characterization using time domain measurements (transmitting and receiving ultrashort pulses) is faster, the characterization is performed by post-processing frequency domain measurements to time domain owing to the advantageous high dynamic range of frequency domain measurements [124].…”

“…The data from the imaging system is acquired in the frequency-domain and converted to the time-domain for post-processing. Data acquisition in the frequency-domain is preferred because of the beneficial high dynamic range of frequency-domain measurements [124]. As it is noted from Fig.…”
