A novel method for fabrication of high-flux zeolite membranes on supports with arbitrary geometry

Abstract: A new widely applicable masking method, relying on rendering the support hydrophobic and thereby protected from the synthesis mixture, was developed for the preparation of zeolite membranes on supports with arbitrary geometries.

“…To solve this problem, 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane and poly(dimethylamine- co -epichlorohydrin- co -ethylenediamine) (ATC-4150) were added as the hydrophobization agent and cationic polymer, respectively. Via the electrostatic force, negatively charged seed crystals were easily adsorbed onto the cationic polymer; meanwhile, since the hydrophilic surface was covered by the hydrophobization agent and turned to be hydrophobic, the precursor invasion was greatly inhibited and a homogeneous seed distribution was approached ( Yu et al., 2019b ).…”

“…To enhance CO 2 adsorption, capping agents can be added to cover the hydroxyl groups. Integration with another hydrophobic zeolite is also an option ( Rehman et al., 2019 ; Yu et al., 2019b ; Wang et al., 2021 ). Moreover, complete elimination of OSDAs benefits CO 2 transport by reducing the hydrophilic residues within the membrane structure ( Jeong et al., 2021 ).…”

“…The highest CO 2 permeance, together with good CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity, was achieved by Yu et al [75] They adopted a delicate substrate-hydrophobization treatment method to prevent the infiltration of zeolite membranes through substrate pores. The rough procedures are shown in Figure 6.…”

“…To achieve ultrathin (i.e., submicron in thickness) zeolite membrane is very challenging, evidenced by longtime endeavors from numerous scientists and engineers [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Currently developed synthesis methods for MFI thin films are categorized in the following: (1) controlled crystallization by additives such as fluoride ion and organic modifier.…”
