A novel method for life estimation of power transformers using fuzzy logic systems: An intelligent predictive maintenance approach

Abstract: Power transformers are a fundamental component of the modern power distribution network. The fault-free operation of step-up and step-down transformers is of prime importance to the continuous supply of electrical energy to the consumers. To ensure such efficient operation, power distribution companies carry out routine maintenance of distribution transformers through preplanned schedules. The efficacy of such maintenance depends on a proper understanding of the transformer and its components and efficient pre… Show more

“…Farhan Naeem et al [47] states that a new method based on fuzzy logic accurately predicts the condition and remaining useful life of power transformers, analyzing components such as windings, insulation, oil, and core. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in predicting failures, but no mention is made of the accuracy of the model in predicting these failures.…”

“…Transformers are utilized for converting electrical power across different voltage levels. During long-term operation, a multitude of issues and failures may arise, among which, heavy overload is particularly prominent [2]. Heavy overload may not only lead to equipment damage and affect the normal operation of a power system but may also aggravate energy waste and environmental pollution.…”

“…Since the insulation system suffers electrical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical stresses that damage it during the period of continuous operation [1][2][3], malfunctions often occur in the transformer insulating system. Electrical utilities in turn incur tremendous losses due to the switching-off operation of the transformer to repair its faults [3][4][5][6]. Therefore, the monitoring, inspection, and periodic maintenance of a transformer are crucial in ensuring a prolonged lifespan of the equipment, and are required in order to avoid the undesired outages of transformers from service caused by the insulation system, which consists of insulating oil and paper [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…service caused by the insulation system, which consists of insulating oil and paper [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] The insulation system (paper/oil) of transformers comprises liquid and solid insula tion to cover the supportive structure such as the winding and inter-turns, and to separat different bodies from each other and from the core and tank [1,2]. The degradation o transformer insulation (oil and paper) is worsened at higher temperatures and in the pres ence of oxygen and moisture [7].…”
