A Novel Method for Preparation of Carrageenan/Fish Scale Collagen/Allopurinol Biocomposite Film

Abstract: Biopolymers such as carrageenan or collagen can be used as carriers for loading a drug to enhance a drug’s bioavailability. In this work, allopurinol was loaded on a carrageenan/collagen blend and the carrageenan/collagen/allopurinol (CCA) biocomposite films were prepared using the ionic gelation method combined with the 3D printing method using carrageenan/collagen/allopurinol gel as a 3D printing ink material. The advantages of the 3D printing method are the ease in shaping the design of films and the ease i… Show more

“…Thus, during the past half a century, on the one hand, more and more types of materials (including natural polymers, synthesis polymers, phospholipid, surfactants, and even inorganic materials) have been tried as new drug carriers for adjusting the drug release performances [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Among them, polymeric excipients are the main stream [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. On the other hand, new materials processing and treatment methods, particularly nanotechnologies, are continuously explored for encapsulating drugs into pharmaceutical excipients for increasing their therapeutic effects [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Collagen-based supplements have emerged as a fundamental component in addressing the effects of the aging process, demonstrating their established capacity to repair skin damage and bestow a rejuvenated and healthy appearance sought after in the pursuit of beauty [9]. Collagen has been recognized as a drug carrier possessing numerous benefits, including non-toxicity, superior biocompatibility, and favorable interactions with pharmaceutical agents [10,11] Collagen could impact tumor cell behavior by interacting with integrins, discoidin domain receptors, tyrosine kinase receptors, and various signaling pathways, and extensive collagen deposition is the primary pathological hallmark of certain cancers [12,13].…”

“…The numbers in which natural and synthetic polymers are introduced into this interdisciplinary field is always increasing [17][18][19][20]. Meanwhile, the techniques, the related methods and strategies for transferring a certain drug to a polymer-based medicated product are simultaneously expanded [21][22][23][24][25][26]. Thus, it is common sense that the joint efforts of advanced materials and advanced technologies have pushed the progress of effective, safe and convenient drug delivery.…”
