A Novel Method for the Extraction, Purification, and Characterization of Noble Gases in Produced Fluids

Abstract: Hydrocarbon systems with declining or viscous oil production are often stimulated using enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, such as the injection of water, steam, and CO2, in order to increase oil and gas production. As EOR and other methods of enhancing production such as hydraulic fracturing have become more prevalent, environmental concerns about the impact of both new and historical hydrocarbon production on overlying shallow aquifers have increased. Noble gas isotopes are powerful tracers of subsurfac… Show more

“…Approximately 13 ml of water was inlet and then degassed under vacuum using a magnetic stirrer in a glass bulb beneath the Cu tube inlet area. Noble gases were then quantitatively transferred into a smaller volume using the capillary method (Beyerle et al, 2000;Hunt, 2015;Tyne et al, 2019). Water vapor in the extraction line was cryogenically drawn across a capillary towards a stainless-steel cold trap cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature (−196 °C).…”
