A novel PLC channel modeling method and channel characteristic analysis of a smart distribution grid

Abstract: Power line carrier (PLC) technology plays an increasingly important role in the realization of cost-effective communication in a smart distribution grid. No current channel modeling method is universally applicable to more complex topologies that may emerge in smart grids, such as ring and mesh topologies. This paper presents a novel PLC channel modeling method based on the information node concept, and the universality and feasibility of the proposed method are demonstrated with applications in modeling netwo… Show more

“…Communications by PLC (Power Line Communication) are currently experiencing a boom, as they offer the possibility of building a very high-speed home local network using the existing electrical infrastructure of buildings [1][2][3]. However, the PLC transmission channel is a difficult environment, as the different branches of the network produce multipaths similar to the propagation conditions of wireless networks [4,5].…”

“…The mesh grid topology is based on closed loops where power might be delivered to nodes through different lines; thus, this topology performs with higher reliability through higher complexity and higher costs [15][16][17]. The issue of performance and availability of the whole communication system depending on network topology is being further discussed in [18,19]. A BPL solution could be deployed in both segments of the power grid-LV (low voltage) and MV (medium voltage) [20,21].…”

“…The smart grid, as a modern electrical network (EN) infrastructure, can enhance the efficiency, reliability, and security of traditional ENs based on the advancement of cyber-physical systems [1][2][3]. In a smart grid, the monitoring, control, and management of the EN depend closely on the smart information and communication (cyber) network [4][5][6], which works such that the EN ensures not only its own secure operation but also reliable operation of the entire communication network. Meanwhile, when the EN fails (especially, through cascading failure), fault cross-propagation between the electrical and communication networks (ECNs), called interdependent network, occurs, which increases the complexity of fault propagation owing to interactions between the ECNs.…”
