A numerical-based part consolidation candidate detection approach with modularization considerations

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…In this article, the implemented genetic algorithm is a binary single-objective genetic algorithm (Sivanandam and Deepa, 2008). These algorithms are often preferred due to their simplicity and ease of implementation – for examples of their utilisation, see authors such as Engel et al (2017), Yang et al (2019) or – although other optimisation techniques could be implemented. The algorithm receives as input the DSM from the function model and the gathered product data.…”

“…They further expanded their work in a related article (Yang et al, 2019), in which they added a numerical approach for the identification of components to consolidate. This approach is a reliable means of support for making modularisation decisions in complex products.…”

“…This design freedom is very useful in the production of optimized parts which could replace existing single parts or even several whole parts which interact with each other. Formally, the design goal is to either consolidate several parts into one or to decompose and recombine parts into new ones [4][5][6][7][8]. Ideally, these new parts are functionally superior to the original ones; however, just having more control over the part geometry during processing may provide many benefits on its own by simplifying the manufacturing process [9][10][11].…”

“…Some unresolved issues exist within the DFAM paradigm, however, and restrict its applicability. First and foremost, during the design process, the practicability of actually using part consolidation or recombination in DFAM [5][6][7] must be carefully examined. This is not always a good approach for every system or product and this must be carefully considered when choosing to which design or re-design process to use [7,44].…”
