A palaeomagnetic approach to the origin of the Black Sea

Abstract: SUMMARY Available palaeomagnetic data for the circum‐Black Sea region are reviewed with the object of evaluating the geodynamical evolution of the Black Sea. Jurassic data from the south of the Stara planina‐Forebalkan zone (south of the Moesian platform) in Bulgaria, which was then part of the east European platform, place the region at about 39° latitude; while the Pontides, the northernmost tectonic unit of Turkey, were at a lower latitude (10‐15°). Palaeomagnetic investigations on Upper Cretaceous magmatic… Show more

“…In order to make a comparison between the observed paleomagnetic rotations and fold belts in the Pontides, a database has been compiled based on this study and paleomagnetic data obtained from previous studies (Vollstadt et al, 1967;Van der Voo, 1968;Pechersky and Nguyen, 1979;Orbay et al, 1983;Sarıbudak, 1989;Platzman et al, 1994;Channell et al, 1996;Piper et al, 1996) ( Table 3).…”

“…In addition to morphometric and field studies, previous studies have shown that the NAF is an important effect on the evolution of the Eastern Pontides, where has been drifting to the north due to the possible uplift mechanism (e.g. Sarıbudak, 1989aSarıbudak, , 1989bHisarlı, 2011). The NAF transfers deformation to the northern part of the interior of the Anatolian plate.…”
