A panoramic view on metadata application profiles of the last decade

Abstract: This paper describes a study developed with the goal to understand the panorama of the metadata Application Profiles (AP): (i) what AP have been developed so far; (ii) what type of institutions have developed these AP; (iii) what are the application domains of these AP; (iv) what are the Metadata Schemes (MS) used by these AP; (v) what application domains have been producing MS; (vi) what are the Syntax Encoding Schemes (SES) and the Vocabulary Encoding Schemes (VES) used by these AP; and finally (vii) if thes… Show more

“…• Syntax Guidelines and Data Formats: defines coding rules for computer systems to use to read / process data. Morgana and Baptista [24] and Malta and Baptista [39] highlight several examples of MAPs that have sought to address a wide range of application domains. Examples cited by the authors are: Scholarly Work Application Profile (SWAP) [40] used to describe academic work and the Virtual Open Access Agriculture -Aquaculture Repository (VOA3R) [41] developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).…”

“…Citing the need for metadata schema designers to have special knowledge and a time-consuming iterative design process, Ochiai et al (2014) have proposed a methodology for designing metadata schema based on the agile development model and a prototype system for its support. Curado, Malta and Baptista (2014) have found 74 application profiles. The most intensive application domain of these application profiles is 'Learning Object' and the metadata schemas employed in them are defined primarily by communities of libraries and repositories.…”
