A Partial Supernumerary Umbilical Vessels

Abstract: ABS TRACT Supernumerary umbilical vessels are related to embryologic developmental defect of umbilical cord. These vessels can be seen varying numbers and types also partial or thoroughly. Extra vein is seen more common than extra artery, generally seen as four umbilical cord vessels (two veins, two arteries). This condition may accompany congenital malformations, poor obstetrics outcomes or well fetuses. “…The UC normally contains three vessels: two umbilical arteries (UA) and one umbilical vein (UV) [2]. The presence of more than three vessels, apart from those mentioned above is defined as supernumery umbilical vessels [4]. The incidence of supernumery vessels is 1%; of these, most are four vessel UCs with the presence of a persistent Right Umbilical Vein (PRUV).…”

“…[1] Umbilical cord is formed on the postconception 13-38 days and some anomalies such as cyst, supernumerary vessels and single umbilical artery may occur during its development. [2][3][4] Moreover, as a charac-teristic of the early fetal development, umbilical cord entanglement may occur between 13 and 16 weeks of gestation and possible resolution may be seen in 63% of fetuses in the following weeks. [5] Its incidence in term pregnancies is 5.5 to 22.8%.…”
