A Parturition-Associated Nonsynaptic Coherent Activity Pattern in the Developing Hippocampus

Abstract: Correlated neuronal activity is instrumental in the formation of networks, but its emergence during maturation is poorly understood. We have used multibeam two-photon calcium microscopy combined with targeted electrophysiological recordings in order to determine the development of population coherence from embryonic to postnatal stages in the hippocampus. At embryonic stages (E16-E19), synchronized activity is absent, and neurons are intrinsically active and generate L-type channel-mediated calcium spikes. At … Show more

“…(2) Niesner et al 2008). While the former have better signal to noise ratio and thus can get good images from deeper regions of a sample, the latter are typically much faster thus allowing real time imaging of really fast processes such as blood Xow (Niesner et al 2007) or nerve activity (Crepel et al 2007). For PMT, the positioning within the light path is an important consideration.…”

“…It is very much dependent on the type of question being asked, what type of analysis is required and to what degree it can be automated. While calcium waves in neuronal networks or optical colocalizations in Wxed or non-moving tissues can be readily analyzed with existing software tools (Crepel et al 2007;Gobel et al 2007), the analysis of cell migration or cellcell contact formation is still not done properly by existing software and, in fact, is done manually or at least with heavy manual veriWcation till today (Hauser et al 2007). …”
