A Patient Information Leaflet Reduces Parental Anxiety Before Their Child's First Craniofacial Multidisciplinary Outpatient Appointment

Abstract: The majority of parents of children referred to a craniofacial MDT appointment displayed concerns that related to the appointment itself. Specific information relating to the appointment process itself was desired. A purpose-built leaflet successfully provided parents with desired information and lowered anxiety among the majority of attendees.

“…Activities to strengthen publicity should be conducted through media campaigns. Pidgen TE [24] noted that parents had limited information regarding appointment setting. Therefore, we solicited the opinions and suggestions of patients and their family members as well as clinical departments to develop the “Explanation of 17 common problems of patients and their family members” and “Implementation details of the comprehensive reservation service for non-emergency registration” guidance documents.…”

“…The findings indicated that the organization of the consultation with the MDT was experienced as emotionally challenging, first of all if participants were not prepared for the number of health professionals present and their function. A recent study based on a craniofacial sample (Pidgeon et al, 2017) showed that a leaflet providing specific information about the MDT appointment led to lower levels of anxiety in parents who attended consultations. The development of a leaflet like the one described in Pidgeon et al (2017) could possibly be a next step in the current treatment setting, hopefully contributing to parents feeling more prepared to their first consultation.…”

Preliminary results from our study subsequently also led the team to include a photograph of the whole team when sending out invitations for the MDT, a change that has not yet been assessed.…”

“…Previous studies mainly reported the use of smartphones for emergency triage and referral for some diseases [14-16], but the added value of using smartphone-based triage for regular appointments remains undefined. The most concerning aspect of adequate appointment registration is that the parents’ level of information regarding their child’s illness is limited [17]. Mobile health is a promising app for appointment registration [14].…”
