An equilibrium-limited heterogeneous catalytic reaction, propene metathesis is suitable for process intensification via sorption enhanced reaction. In this work, we investigate the effect of catalyst/adsorbent configuration for propene metathesis in conjunction with pressure swing reaction. The catalyst and adsorbent configuration variations were defined in terms of packing heterogeneity index (PHI) and their effects were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Model predictions were tested against experimental data with variable PHI and adsorption/reaction conditions, including the absence of heterogeneity and of separation process. The product 2-butene was strongly adsorbed and retained by the intermediate adsorbent layers, thereby increasing reactant concentration in the reaction zone and enhancing conversion and rate of reaction in the subsequent layer. Model predictions were found to agree reasonably with experimental data and were used to elucidate the mechanism and optimizing principle for such reactors.

Integration of catalytic reaction and separation operations is important for process intensification (PI). Experimental studies on promotion of the dehydrogenation reaction using hydrogen adsorbent during catalytic dehydrogenation reaction were reviewed. The promotion effect was lost after saturation of the adsorbent, so that regeneration under reduced pressure was essential to start the reaction again. The developed reactor was the so-called pressure swing reactor (PSR) or pressure swing adsorption type reactor (PSA reactor) after the cyclic operations of pressurization and evacuation. Dehydrogenation of cyclohexane, and dehydroaromatization of n-hexane, propane and methane were investigated. Pt/Al2O3 _ CaNi5, Zn/H-ZSM-5 _ Mg51Zn20, Zn/H-ZSM-5 _ Ti fine powder, and Mo/H-ZSM-5 _ Ti fine powder catalysts showed high promotion effects. Because of the differences in reaction temperature, the recommended combination of catalyst and adsorbent varies depending on the reaction. Swing of partial pressure of hydrogen by inert purge gas regenerated the promotion effect showing the potential of the PSR for PI.

Reversible reactions (A 1 B 5 C 1 D) can be performed to near completion using an admixture of catalyst and sorbent that will selectively adsorb one of the reaction products. For an initially clean sorbent and a favorable adsorption isotherm and a long reactor, the adsorbed product, C, will propagate as a sharp, shock-like front. While the adsorbed product will not move faster than this front, the second, nonadsorbed product, D, will, in principle, leave the reactor, uncontaminated. However, a parametric analysis of the two examples presented in this work, the water gas shift and the cracking of hydrogen sulfide, reveals an unexpectedly complex behavior. While assuming adsorption equilibrium the effect of the equilibrium constant, the reaction kinetics and adsorption isotherm on the reactant and product concentration profiles are simulated. It is found that desired behavior is favored by large equilibrium constants, rapid kinetics, and strong nonlinear adsorption. Figure 6.
