A Phenotypic and Genotypic Evaluation of Developmental Toxicity of Polyhexamethylene Guanidine Phosphate Using Zebrafish Embryo/Larvae

Abstract: Polyhexamethylene guanidine-phosphate (PHMG-P), a guanidine-based cationic antimicrobial polymer, is an effective antimicrobial biocide, potent even at low concentrations. Due to its resilient bactericidal properties, it has been used extensively in consumer products. It was safely used until its use in humidifiers led to a catastrophic event in South Korea. Epidemiological studies have linked the use of PHMG-P as a humidifier disinfectant to pulmonary fibrosis. However, little is known about its harmful impac… Show more

Cytotoxicity, lung fibrosis, and pulmonary genotoxicity due to PHMG exposure were described as a consequence of toxicity testing undertaken shortly after HDLI was reported.…”

“…Its consumption has increased significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The toxicity of PGMG has been studied on warm-blooded animals and fish (Kim et al, 2013;Kim and Ji, 2019;Song et al, 2020), but there are almost no data on its effect on planktonic organisms. PGMG is a polymeric cation with a positively charged nitrogen atom in each polymeric unit:…”
