A phylogenetic analysis and revised classification of the Monocotylidae Taschenberg, 1879 (Monogenea)

Abstract: The Monocotylidae Taschenberg, 1879 is revised based on a cladistic analysis of relationships between the constituent species and genera. The monophyly of the family is supported by three apomorphic character states: division of the haptor into one central and eight peripheral loculi; the ovary looping the right intestinal caecum; and tetrahedral eggs. The family is divided into six subfamilies:

“…Despite the increase in the number of studies of the phylogenetic relationships of monogeneans using morphological features (BOEGER & KRITSKY, 1989, 1993CHISHOLM et al, 1995;WHITTINGTON, 2004), there still exist confusion between characters (morphological features) and the states (derived forms) of those characters. All of the states of a particular character are homologous.…”

“…In the revision of Monocotylidae, Chisholm et al (1995) combined Monocotylinae with Dendromonocotylinae into a single subfamily defined by the uniquely derived and easily visible septal and papillary haptoral sclerites. This decision has supported by molecular analysis (Chisholm et al 2001).…”

“…A Chisholm, 1995 from Dasyatis fluviorum by its morphology and size of the anchors (525) which show a long and striated handle, but differs from it by the number of loops of the MCO (12 vs 6). However, according to Chisholm et al (1995), the two available specimens of this species "are not in good condition and the haptor and anatomy are unknow".…”

“…Calicotyle is a somewhat unusual monogenean in that it is endoparasitic, found in the cloaca, rectum, rectal gland, spiral valve, or oviducts of its hosts (Sproston, 1946;Yamaguti, 1963;Chisholm et al, 1995Chisholm et al, , 2001). In the past, this parasite has attracted attention of numerous investigators and various aspects of biology of Calicotyle were studied using molecular and morphological methods, including electron microscopy.…”

“…Within the Monocotylidae, spermiogenesis and spermatozoon ultrastructure of 9 species from 5 of the 6 subfamilies identifi ed by Chisholm et al (1995) were studied (see Bruňanská et al, 2017). These data include two species of the genus Calicotyle, namely Calicotyle kroyeri and Calicotyle australiensis (Tappenden & Kern, 1991;Watson & Rohde, 1994).…”
