Abstract. The size structure and biomass of a phytoplankton community during the spring bloom period can affect the energy use of higher-trophic-level organisms through the predator-prey body size relationships. The timing of the sea ice retreat (TSR) also plays a crucial role in the seasonally ice-covered marine ecosystem, because it is tightly coupled with the timing of the spring bloom. Thus, it is important to monitor the temporal and spatial distributions of a phytoplankton community size structure. Prior to this study, an ocean colour algorithm was developed to derive phytoplankton size index F L , which is defined as the ratio of chlorophyll a (chl a) derived from cells larger than 5 µm to the total chl a, using satellite remote sensing for the Chukchi and Bering shelves. Using this method, we analysed the pixel-bypixel relationships between F L during the marginal ice zone (MIZ) bloom period and TSR over the period of 1998-2013. The influences of the TSR on the sea surface temperature (SST) and changes in ocean heat content ( OHC) during the MIZ bloom period were also investigated. A significant negative relationship between F L and the TSR was widely found in the shelf region during the MIZ bloom season. However, we found a significant positive (negative) relationship between the SST ( OHC) and TSR. Specifically, an earlier sea ice retreat was associated with the dominance of larger phytoplankton during a colder and weakly stratified MIZ bloom season, suggesting that the duration of the nitrate supply, which is important for the growth of large-sized phytoplankton in this region (i.e. diatoms), can change according to the TSR. In addition, under-ice phytoplankton blooms are likely to occur in years with late ice retreat, because sufficient light for phytoplankton growth can pass through the ice and penetrate into the water columns as a result of an increase in solar radiation toward the summer solstice. Moreover, we found that both the length of the ice-free season and the annual median of F L positively correlated with the annual net primary production (APP). Thus, both the phytoplankton community composition and growing season are important for the APP in the study area. Our findings showed a quantitative relationship between the interannual variability of F L , the TSR, and the APP, which suggested that satellite remote sensing of the phytoplankton community size structure is suitable to document the impact of a recent rapid sea ice loss on the ecosystem of the study region.

Abstract. Chlorophyll a (Chl) concentrations derived from satellite measurements have been used in oceanographic research, for example to interpret eco-responses to environmental changes on global and regional scales. However, it is unclear how existing Chl products compare with each other in terms of accuracy and consistency in revealing temporal and spatial patterns, especially in the optically complex marginal seas. In this study, we examined three MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Chl data products that have been made available to the community by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) using community-accepted algorithms and default parameterization. These included the products derived from the OC3M (ocean chlorophyll three-band algorithm for MODIS), GSM (Garver-Siegel-Maritorena model) and GIOP (generalized inherent optical properties) algorithms. We compared their temporal variations and spatial distributions in the northern South China Sea. We found that the three products appeared to capture general features such as unique winter peaks at the Southeast Asian Time-series Study station (SEATS, 18 • N, 116 • E) and the Pearl River plume associated blooms in summer. Their absolute magnitudes, however, may be questionable in the coastal zones. Additional error statistics using field measured Chl as the truth demonstrated that the three MODIS Chl products may contain high degree of uncertainties in the study region. Root mean square error (RMSE) of the products from OC3M and GSM (on a log scale) was about 0.4 and average percentage error (ε) was ∼ 115 % (Chl between 0.05-10.41 mg m −3 , n = 114). GIOP with default parameterization led to higher errors (ε = 329 %). An attempt to tune the algorithms based on a local coastal-water bio-optical data set led to reduced errors for Chl retrievals, indicating the importance of local tuning of globally-optimized algorithms. Overall, this study points to the need of continuous improvements for algorithm development and parameterization for the coastal zones of the study region, where quantitative interpretation of the current Chl products requires extra caution.

Abstract. The distribution of the phytoplankton size class (PSC) and the variations in the size classes are key to understanding 10 ocean biogeochemical processes and ecosystem. Remote sensing of the PSC in the East China Sea (ECS) remains a challenge, although many PSC algorithms have been developed. Here based on a local dataset from the ECS, a regional model was tuned to infer the PSC from the spectral features of normalized phytoplankton absorption (aph) using a principal component analysis approach. Before applying the refined model to the real MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data, reconstructing satellite Rrs at 412 and 443 nm becomes critical through modeling them from Rrs between 469 and 555 nm using 15 multiple regression analyses. Satellite-derived PSC values compare well with those derived from pigment composition, which demonstrates the potential of satellite ocean color data to estimate PSC distributions in the ECS from space. The refined model was applied to aph derived from Rrs observations collected by MODIS over the ECS from 2003 to 2016. Seasonal images show that the PSC distribution was heterogeneous in both temporal and spatial scales. Seasonal variations of the PSC in the ECS were probably affected by a combination of the water column stability, upwelling, sea surface temperature, and the Kuroshio 20Current.
