“…However, recent studies looking at the role of the nurse practitioner revealed that in certain circumstances their care might be equal to that provided by consultants (Hill, 1997;Earnshaw and Stephenson, 1997;Garvican et al, 1998;Reynolds et al, 2000;Miles et al, 2002;Moore et al, 2002;Rafferty and Elbom, 2002;Sharples et al, 2002).…”

“…The evaluation of patient satisfaction with a nurse led joint replacement review clinic was examined in this study, and is important as seeking consumer opinion can influence service planning and delivery (Bond and Thomas, 1992). Satisfaction with care is a perception which presents a challenge (Fitzpatrick, 1991;Bond and Thomas, 1992) and over recent years there has been an increase in the number of studies, signalling its importance in the field of health care research (Dolinsky and Caputo, 1990;Bond and Thomas, 1992;Hill et al, 1994;Hill, 1997;Garvican et al, 1998;Clendon, 2003;Miles et al, 2002;Moore et al, 2002). Ventura et alÕs (1982) research has indicated that patients will tend to indicate a high level of satisfaction even when this is clearly not the case.…”

“…Such a nursing role in long-term follow-up has been recognised in the USA for a number of years, with nurses there having greater autonomy [7,8]. This reflects a more general difference in practice between nurses in the USA and the UK although nurse-led clinics have been developed more in other contexts such as anti-coagulation clinics and genito-urinary medicine in the UK [9][10][11]. A recent randomised controlled trial in the UK concluded that nurse-led follow-up of lung cancer patients with at least three months to live was acceptable to both patients and GPs and led to care that was responsive to patient needs, increased patient satisfaction and reduced the number of hospital visits and investigations [12].…”

“…The literature provides a varied insight into nurse led clinics in both primary and secondary care settings and spans numerous health care specialities, including medical, general surgical and psychiatric care (Garvican et al, 1998;Wright et al, 2001;Miles et al, 2002;Sharples et al, 2002). Within the orthopaedic speciality few studies have been undertaken into patient satisfaction of nurse led clinics following joint replacement surgery.…”

“…The choice of design relies partly on the type of research and the health care setting (Hall et al, 1988;Fitzpatrick, 1991). Miles et al (2002) performed a comparison and patient satisfaction study between doctor and nurse led care in a sexual health clinic setting. The researchers chose to use a modified version of the LSQ due to its adaptability and rigorous testing during its development.…”
