Much work has been done in the area of data access and integration using various data mapping, matching, and loading techniques. One of the main concerns when integrating data from heterogeneous data sources is data redundancy. The concern is mainly due to the different business contexts and purposes from which the data systems were originally built. A common process for accessing data from integrated databases involves the use of each data source’s own catalogue or metadata schema. In this article, the authors take the view that there is a greater chance of data inconsistencies, such as data redundancies when integrating them within a grid environment as compared to traditional distributed paradigms. The importance of improving the data search and matching process is briefly discussed, and a partial service oriented generic strategy is adopted to consolidate distinct catalogue schemas of federated databases to access information seamlessly. To this end, a proposed matching strategy between structure objects and data values across federated databases in a grid environment is presented.

Database queries within a component framework usually take the form of a string passed to an operation in a component's interface. The interface operation accepts a value of type string as an actual parameter and implements the necessary support to resolve the query. In such an approach, a component's interface does not explicitly state the queries supported by that component. In this paper, we present an approach in which queries supported by a component are explicitly defined in its interface enabling a contract between a client of an interface and a component to be agreed. In our approach, a client creates a well-defined context within which interface operations can be executed. A context enables more complex queries to be constructed as sequences of related queries and saved contexts can be further combined to form more complex environments for query execution.

With the proliferation of international standards for grid-enabled databases, the need for data loading and mapping is identified. It is required in a large integrated environment encompassing heterogeneous databases. This research study proposes an intermediate staging facility in order to upload and integrate data from various small to large size data repositories. The proposed facility has been employed to temporarily store and process the data before it is validated. This research expands the integration notion of a database management system (DBMS) to include the data loading, data matching and transformation processes in traditional and grid distributed environments. The data mapping is employed in the form of value correspondences by using a staging DBMS. A service-based generic strategy grid staging catalogue service (GSCATS) is introduced. It consolidates distinct catalogue schemas of federated databases to access information seamlessly. It involves data mapping and matching of structure objects of federated databases.
