“…We observed a higher respiratory rate in Kajli lambs than reported by Anderson (1975). In the present study, the variations recorded for respiratory rate are consistent with previous studies indicating that this parameter displays homeostatic physiological variability during the first four weeks postpartum (Davey et al, 1998).…”

“…Thermistors (Cole-Palmer) and skin probes (Yellow-Springs Instruments 409A) covered by mylar insulating pads (Kendall) were used to measure maternal breast temperature 3 inches above the left nipple in the midclavicular line, neonatal abdominal temperature 1 cm below the right costal margin, and neonatal toe temperature on the ball of the right foot below the big toe. Toe temperature was measured because of our interest in vascular perfusion (Anderson, 1975) and because this temperature is the earliest to reflect the onset of cold stress. Neonate behavioral state (including feeding) was measured with the Anderson Behavioral State Scoring System (Anderson et al, 1990;Gill, Behnke, Conlon, & Anderson, 1992).…”

“…First, the maternal KC milieu contains many stimuli that resemble the intrauterine environment, and (presumably because of the familiarity to the neonate) such stimuli promote rest and reduce stress for neonates (Anderson, 1977). Second, sucking and contact may have vagal effects (Anderson, 1974(Anderson, , 1975Widstrom et al, 1988). Third, prevention of crying and promotion of regular respirations may minimize right-to-left foramen ovale shunting and hypoxemia (Anderson, 1974(Anderson, , 1975(Anderson, , 1988Anderson, Burroughs, & Measel, 1983;Dinwiddie, Patel, Kumar, & Fox, 1979;Gill, White, & Anderson, 1984).…”

“…From this perspective, any lesser opportunity would constitute some degree of interaction deprivation. 11,12 The idea of the newborn giving care to his mother is not novel, but it may come as a bit of a surprise to some. Yet consider these conclusions from the following recent research.…”
