A Preliminary Study of Insect Succession in Al‐Ahsaa Oasis, in the Eastern Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Rabbit carcass decomposition was examined in four seasons in Al-Ahsaa Oasis. Decomposition rate was significantly faster in summer compared with other seasons. Fourteen insect species from four orders and seven families were recorded: Calliphoridae, Muscidae, Sarcophagidae, Formicidae, Histeridae, Dermestidae, and Tenebrionidae. Most of the fly maggots collected were Calliphoridae with only one species from both Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. Maggots of Calliphora vicina (R.-D.) and Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann)… Show more

“… Saprinus ( S. ) semistriatus was previously mentioned in forensic-based experiments as being collected regularly on carrion especially during the active decay stage and useful in post-mortem interval ( PMI ) estimation ( Szelecz et al 2018 ). Saprinus ( S. ) chalcites was recorded on rabbit carcasses during insect succession study in Al-Ahsaa Oasis (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) in summer, winter, and spring ( Shaalan et al 2017 ). Saprinus ( S. ) aeneus was recorded on human cadaver in Italy and utilised to establish the PMI ( Introna et al 1998 ).…”

“…albiceps, and this species mostly reported in the spring and summer (Salimi et al 2018b). Chrysomy albiceps has been reported as the most dominant species on rabbit carcass collected in four seasons in the eastern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Shaalan et al 2017), and two seasons in Iran (Salimi et al 2018b). Given that these species are present on both treated and untreated carcasses, they can be used as a good indicator to estimate the time of death.…”

“…Setyaningrum and Al Dhafer (2014) reported these flies from eight provinces, and Mashaly et al (2017) reported finding them in Arar (Northern province). Furthermore, C. albiceps have been recorded on different animal carcasses, such as on sheep (Alahmed 2004;Bosly 2010;Mashaly et al 2017), rabbit (Mashaly et al 2020;Shaalan et al 2017), camel, dog and goat carcasses (Mashaly et al 2019). In addition, C. albiceps have been recorded on human corpses in Saudi Arabia by Al-Shareef andZaki (2017), Al-Qahtni et al (2019) and Al-khalifa et al (2020), in line with evidence from many other countries (Grassberger et al (2003) in Austria, Kosmann et al (2011) in Brazil, Klekovska et al (2017) in the Republic of Macedonia, Bugelli et al (2018) in Italy, Bernhardt et al (2018) in Germany, Moemenbellah-Fard et al (2018) in Iran and Corrêa et al (2019) in India).…”

“…Chrysomya albiceps have been observed in a wide variety of environments all year round (Alahmed et al 2006;Shaalan et al 2017): in vehicle habitats (Al-Qahtni et al 2019) and in both indoor and outdoor habitats (Al-khalifa et al 2020;Corrêa et al 2019). The life cycle of C. albiceps consists of three larval instars and a pupal stage.…”
