A Probabilistic Arsenic Exposure Assessment for Children Who Contact CCA‐Treated Playsets and Decks, Part 1: Model Methodology, Variability Results, and Model Evaluation

Abstract: Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of young children who may contact arsenic residues while playing on and around chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood playsets and decks. Although CCA registrants voluntarily canceled the production of treated wood for residential use in 2003, the potential for exposure from existing structures and surrounding soil still poses concerns. The EPA's Office of Research and Development developed and applied the probabilistic Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Sim… Show more

“…Incidental ingestion is a primary route of exposure for pesticides, metals including lead and arsenic, flame retardants and microbes (Chisolm Jr and Harrison, 1956;Aung et al, 2004;Jones-Otazo et al, 2005;Zartarian et al, 2006;De Miguel et al, 2007;Morgan et al, 2007;Nicas and Best, 2008). Furthermore clean-up decisions and appropriate risk mitigation actions for hazardous waste sites, including Superfund sites, are based on estimates of the incidental ingestion and dermal exposure pathways (US EPA, 2004).…”

“…Non-dietary ingestion exposure has continued to be the primary route for lead and other heavy metal exposure in children (Chisolm Jr and Harrison, 1956;Aung et al, 2004;Zartarian et al, 2006;De Miguel et al, 2007), and is the primary contribution to the polybromindated diphenyl ether body burden of toddlers through adults (Jones-Otazo et al, 2005). Furthermore, non-dietary ingestion exposure is the primary means of transmission for certain infectious diseases like the influenza virus, where exposure occurs through the hand and mouthing contacts with fomites (Nicas and Best, 2008).…”

“…However, (a) chemical form and bioavailability of As in environmental and microenvironmental media, including food (USEPA, 1998), (b) routes and pathways of exposure Zartarian et al, 2006), (c) presence of other contaminants (Hays et al, 2006), and (d) individual variability in metabolism, depending on genetic makeup and developmental stage (Meza et al, 2005;Suzuki, 2005;Valenzuela et al, 2005) are important in determining biologically relevant target tissue dose and health effects.…”

“…The option of estimating contributions from hand-to-mouth pathway is also available within MENTOR-4M, based on the approach described in Zartarian et al (2006). However, due to lack of data for characterizing model inputs, this option was not used in the present study.…”
