A promising peptide antibiotic from Terfezia claveryi aqueous extract against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro

Abstract: The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts, as well as partially purified proteins extracted from Terfezia claveryi aqueous extract were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. A 5% aqueous extract inhibited the growth of S. aureus by 66.4%, while a methanolic extract was ineffective. Partial protein purification of the aqueous extract using ammonium sulphate precipitation revealed that antimicrobial activity was within the third fraction. This fraction was then subjected to gel… Show more

“…A promising antibiotic and antimicrobial activity has been detected in desert truffles (Chellal and Lukasova, 1995;Janakat et al, 2004Janakat et al, , 2005Rougieux, 1963). All these findings make desert truffles very remarkable.…”

“…The supernatant was dialyzed against 0.05 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2 for 24 h at 4 °C and the precipitate was re-suspended to its original volume using the same buffer. The dialyzed portion was sterilized by filtration with a disposable syringe filter unit (0.20 μm) and kept for antimicrobial assay (Janakat et al, 2004).…”

“…More recently food scientists have focused special attention on the bioactivities of truffles, including their antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, anti-mutagenic and anti-inflammatory activities (Breene 1990;Sagakami et al 1991;Chang and Buswell 1996;Hussain and Al-Ruqaie 1999;Isabelle et al 2010;Murcia et al 2002;Janakat et al 2004;Janakat et al 2005;Saleh 2006;Fratianni et al 2007;Stanikunaite et al 2007;Heleno et al 2010;Al-Laith 2010;Chen et al 2010;Janakat & Nassar 2010;Wang and Marcone 2011.
