Summary1. This account reviews information on all aspects of the biology of Juniperus communis that are relevant to understanding its ecological characteristics and behaviour. The main topics are presented within the standard framework of the Biological Flora of the British Isles : distribution, habitat, communities, responses to biotic factors, responses to environment, structure and physiology, phenology, floral and seed characters, herbivores and disease, history and conservation. 2. Juniperus communis (juniper) is an evergreen dioecious gymnosperm shrub with two main population centres in Britain, one on chalk downlands of southern England and the other in northern England and Scotland. British populations are divided into two main subspecies although there is overlap in genetic and morphological features. Subspecies communis varies from a spreading shrub to an erect tree characteristic of calcareous soils in southern England, various soils in the Scottish highlands, while ssp. nana is a small procumbent shrub, restricted to well-drained bogs and, more usually, rocky outcrops, generally as a minor component of upland heaths and montane scrub. Both subspecies are drought and frost tolerant, although sensitive to fire. A third subspecies, hemisphaerica , primarily found in mountains of southern Europe has two small populations on maritime cliffs in the UK. 3. Although not very palatable, J. communis is grazed by small and large mammals when food is short, particularly in winter. Its low palatability is derived from oils found in the needles, cones and wood, dominated by monoterpenes. These have been extensively used in folklore medicine and to flavour alcoholic drinks, and are being investigated for new medicinal uses. 4. Juniperus communis ssp. communis is a characteristic light-demanding invader of pasture but has declined due to agricultural expansion, erosion, overgrazing, fire and poor regeneration, such that it is now rare and threatened across lowland/southern Europe. Although susceptible to overgrazing, some grazing can be beneficial to create the open sward necessary for seedling establishment. Statistical seed classifiers of 10 plant families representative of the Mediterranean vascular flora

The aim of this study was to implement a seed morphometric and colorimetric database in order to develop specific statistical classifiers for 10 families representative of the Mediterranean vascular flora. The 501 analysed accessions consisted of 274 taxa belonging to 161 genera and 52 families. Images were acquired by a flatbed scanner and then elaborated by a macro software program developed for the morpho-colorimetric measurements. The mean seed weight was also calculated for each accession. Statistical classifiers were elaborated for genera and specific and infraspecific taxa discrimination within the following families: Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Brassicaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Cistaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Poaceae and Scrophulariaceae. Such classifiers, based on Linear Discriminant Analysis and checked by cross validation, showed a performance ranging from 90.4% to 98.5% and from 87.8% to 98.3% at genus and taxon levels respectively. A first application of this technique to gymnosperm seeds was also presented. The performance of correct classification (93.6%) obtained for the genus Juniperus suggests that this technology is also reliable for gymnosperms. Seed weight improved the accuracy of the classifier system, confirming that an extensive database of bio-morphological traits constituted by a large number of seed species may be useful for taxonomic identification.

Orophilous plant communities of the Pino‐Juniperetea class, occurring in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean area, are examined. This vegetation is characterized by the dominance of trees and shrubs, mostly represented by conifers belonging to the genera Juniperus, Abies and Pinus. These communities are nowadays relegated to the supra‐ and oromediterranean belt, and show a fragmentary distribution, which is an evident proof of their relict connotation. The comparison among these communities, based on original and literature data, has highlighted a remarkable floristic and structural homogeneity, together with a series of geographical vicariances. From the phytosociological point of view, this justifies the arrangement of the aforesaid communities in the class Pino‐Juniperetea RIVAS‐MARTÍNEZ 1964, whose range is therefore extended to the whole Mediterranean basin. In the Central and Eastern Mediterranean area, the class is represented by the order Juniperetalia hemisphaericae, which comprises two new alliances: Berberidion aetnensis, restricted to the Central Mediterranean area, and Berberido creticae‐Juniperion foetidissimae, distributed in the Eastern Mediterranean area. Both of them have been on its turn split up in some suballiances, to emphasize the floristic autonomy of some well‐defined phytogeographical districts. The identified associations, many of them new to science, are examined from the nomenclatural, floristical, ecological, structural and chorological point of view. New groups described pp. 265 ff.
