A prospective, randomized comparison of Oxyglobin (HB‐200) and packed red blood cell transfusion for canine babesiosis

Abstract: Objective -To establish the efficacy of Oxyglobin in canine babesiosis and compare it to standard therapy, packed red blood cell transfusion (pRBCT) with respect to improvements in specific parameters of blood gas, acid-base, blood pressure, and subjective evaluations. Design -Prospective, randomized, clinical trial. Setting -Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. Animals -Twelve dogs (8-25 kg) naturally infected with Babesia rossi and a hematocrit of 0Interventions -Treatment groups were randomized to r… Show more

“…Only a single direct comparison of BHS and pRBC has been undertaken in dogs during an RCT comparing administration of the 2 products for stabilization of dogs with babesiosis. No difference in recovery of acid/base and perfusion variables was found, but those dogs receiving pRBC had a faster clinical recovery …”

“…No difference in recovery of acid/base and perfusion variables was found, but those dogs receiving pRBC had a faster clinical recovery. 39 In conclusion, BHS could be administered if pRBC or whole blood are not available. However, BHS currently is unavailable in many countries, including the United States.…”

“…Clinical reports describe the use of Hb‐200 in treating anemia and hypotension in dogs and cats. Zambelli and Leisewitz administered 20 mL/kg of Hb‐200 over 4 hours to anemic dogs diagnosed with clinical babesiosis. All dogs treated with Hb‐200 had an SBP that remained <160 mm Hg.…”

“…95,133 One was a multicenter clinical trial for dogs with moderate to severe anemia (PCV, 6% to 23%). 133 Blood gas, acid-base, and blood pressure were objective measures of response to treatment. Dogs in both groups were monitored for a decrease in hemoglobin concentration or deterioration in physical condition at which time they received additional oxygen-carrying support.…”
