A Prospective Study of the Value of Conventional CT, Dynamic CT, Ultrasonography and Arteriography for Staging Renal Carcinoma

Abstract: The value of dynamic CT scanning for staging renal carcinoma was studied prospectively in 28 patients and the results compared with those of ultrasonography, arteriography and conventional CT. Arteriography correctly staged 48% of tumours; ultrasonography and conventional CT correctly staged 50% and dynamic CT correctly staged 72%. Dynamic CT staged renal carcinoma more accurately than ultrasonography, conventional CT or arteriography and it is suggested that arteriography should be restricted to specific indi… Show more

“…Although some cases of these negative angiographic findings are difficult to diagnose as RCC, the introduction of new imaging modalities, such as the computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasonography, has led to substantial improvements in the accuracy of diagnosis. 2 The present study assessed the histopathological features of hypovascular or avascular RCC, and clarified these non-typical RCCs, based on the tumor-related vasculature, histological organization, and cell types of the tumor.…”

“…41 For stage IV disease, CT has a sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 99%. 40,42,43 CT is an excellent imaging modality for follow-up of patients treated with partial nephrectomy. Mandatory follow-up is also necessary because in 1% to 3% of patients with a solitary renal cell carcinoma, an asynchronous contralateral renal cell cancer subsequently develops.…”
