A Protic Ionic Liquid Catalyzes CO2 Conversion at Atmospheric Pressure and Room Temperature: Synthesis of Quinazoline‐2,4(1H,3H)‐diones

Abstract: The chemical fixation of CO2 under mild reaction conditions is of significance from a sustainable chemistry viewpoint. Herein a CO2-reactive protic ionic liquid (PIL), [HDBU(+)][TFE(-)], was designed by neutralization of the superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) with a weak proton donor trifluoroethanol (TFE). As a bifunctional catalyst for simultaneously activating CO2 and the substrate, this PIL displayed excellent performance in catalyzing the reactions of CO2 with 2-aminobenzonitriles at atmos… Show more

“…The first one is to create a low-carbon economic development model that conserves energy and controls energy from the source. The second method is to convert CO 2 into useful organic chemicals [2][3][4]. Continuous emission of CO 2 is expected to occur for a long time due to human dependence on fossil fuel.…”

“…Furthermore, heterocycles could be synthesized using ILs as both media and catalyst, and CO 2 as reactant. Zhao et al (2014) synthesized a protic IL [HDBU + ][TFE -] by neutralization of the superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene with a weak proton donor trifluoroethanol and used as solvent and catalyst for synthesize quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones using 2-aminobenzonitriles and CO 2 and the substrates. Two reactants were activated simultaneously on the same IL catalyst, and high yields of products were achieved under mild reaction conditions.…”
